The idea that the experience of living in Northern Ireland was valid material for a book – and not a history book! – was beyond me. Up until that point, I believed that everyone I wanted to read about either went to boarding school in England or high school in America. It had never occurred to me that someone could write a book about where I came from. ![]() ![]() Acting as a kind of retelling of the Romeo & Juliet tale, the books follow the lives of Kevin, a Catholic and Sadie a Protestant as they grow up in Northern Ireland in the 1970s, meeting as teenagers and following them until they become adults with children of their own.ĭespite living in Northern Ireland in the 1970s, The Twelfth Day of July struck a chord with me for one main reason. Written by Joan Lingard, who spent her teenage years in Northern Ireland, The Twelfth Day of July is the first in a quintet of books, often known as the ‘Kevin and Sadie’ series. ![]() The Twelfth Day of July was first published in 1970 when I was 9 years old, however I think I was at least 13 when I read it. The book I have chosen for this week’s The Book That Built the Blogger is Joan Lingard’s 1970 book The Twelfth Day of July – another book that would probably be considered YA today but which opened my eyes to the possibilities of where books could go – and more imp ![]()

![]() ![]() Like any 10 year old child would, Ann longed for the company of the relatives and friends she left behind. There is not a lot of action or sensationalistic drama, but the book happily offers a historically accurate portrayal of a young girl’s experience moving west with her family. ![]() In fact, the historical accuracy is probably the book’s most outstanding strength. It depicts the loneliness and hardships of pioneer life, when many Americans were slowly starting to move west to make a life and to build the country that we know today. The book is very realistic, down to earth, and presents the historical context and events in a very accurate way. Show More revolves around the life of a 10-year-old girl named Ann Hamilton who moves from Gettysburg Pennsylvania to the “Western Country” with her family, far away from the comforts of “civilization” in the eastern side of the infant yet growing United States. ![]() ![]() ![]() The series is comprised of four books: Dealing with Dragons (1990), Searching for Dragons (1991), Calling on Dragons (1993), and Talking to Dragons (1985). Most of all I learned the one set of skills that has remained important throughout my life: how to deal with dragons. Inside their pages I met my earliest role models that didn’t walk out of folklore or history books: Princess Cimorene and King Kazul. I was about seven years old when I found the blue and grey and black hardcover books in my elementary school library: Patricia C. My PhD might be on Disney and fairy tale adaptations now, but the princess I looked up to when I was younger (and still, now) was never found on the shelves of one of their stores, or in their animated films. She understands her sexuality and expresses what she wants, and I wish I was more like that in terms of my sexuality. I enjoyed writing about Liwa, she’s strong, bold and takes charge of who she is. I could see my life through hers and use her voice to emulate my thoughts. Liwa was that person I could live through vicariously. I felt there was so much of me I could share in terms of personality and different sexual desires I’d want to experience. ![]() Jackie: Yes! That’s when she turns convention on its head, introducing not a handsome prince, but Hudson the hapless shepherd, and the idea that far from being malign, Melvina’s blessing may have had a purpose. To that point Extraordinary is Anderson poking fun at the misogynistic attitude of most fairy tales, where the height of aspiration is to be married. ![]() The idea is that she’ll be rescued by a brave prince, and marriage will follow. Basil grows up dowdy in comparison with her sisters, with her mother despairing that she’ll ever become engaged, so hitting on the plan of having her abducted by a dragon. Basil is blessed with being ordinary, which in the high glamour royal circles appears to be no blessing at all. Unfortunately, when daughter number seven arrived the goodwill of the more pleasant fairies had been exhausted, and all that was left for Basil was a blessing from the grumpy Melvina, gloriously drawn with a cigar chomping scowl by Anderson. ![]() Extraordinary is a smart satirical look at the type of fairy tales handed down through the generations in the Western world, knowing, funny and yet empowering.Ĭassie Anderson begins with the traditional set of princesses, seven of them born to an obviously fertile king and queen, each blessed with a talent by a friendly fairy shortly after birth. ![]() ![]() ![]() While Baruch has had many biographers, none of them have attained Grant’s aesthetic sensibility, understanding of finance, or his inability to be more respecting than respectable.” -Matthew Winkler, Editor in Chief, Bloomberg Business News “Similar to Reminiscences of a Stock Operator, only all fact, is James Grant’s excellent biography, Bernard Baruch. I feel that Dynamite might have a tough time convincing the comic community that the Hornet is a hero worth investing in after all, this is a character best remembered for briefly having Bruce Lee as a sidekick. But taking into account the book’s movie origins it’s also woefully predictable, commencing with a flashback that announces the jade vigilante’s retirement, and later introducing Britt Reid’s arrogant dickwad of a son, who’ll presumably inherit the mantle. If it’s terrible, then the hype and rumour we endured circa 2004 was for nothing and if the series is fantastic, then comic readers can silently lament the great superhero movie that never was.Īnyway, foreboding aside, this is shaping up to be a solid enough series. ![]() Given the hype that once surrounded Smith’s Hornet project, a series such as this is potentially a lose/lose situation for both fans of the Golden Age hero and the creators involved. ![]() ![]() ![]() ” – Unknown “No matter how much I say I love you, I always love you more than that.
